Should I Let My Car Insurance Auto-Renew?

Car insurance auto-renewal can be convenient, but it doesn't necessarily mean you should simply accept your renewal quote without checking your options.

If your policy is approaching its renewal date, taking a few minutes to review your cover and compare car insurance quotes could help you decide whether staying with your current insurer is right for you.

What does car insurance auto-renewal mean?

Auto-renewal means your insurer will automatically renew your car insurance when your existing policy ends, unless you tell them not to.

It's designed to make renewing easier and can help prevent you accidentally finding yourself without insurance.

Your insurer should tell you whether your policy automatically renews and explain how you can stop the automatic renewal.

Is it a good idea to let car insurance auto-renew?

It can certainly be convenient, but it's still worth checking your renewal before allowing it to go ahead.

Your circumstances may have changed during the year and other insurers may now offer policies that better suit your needs.

Before renewing, consider:

  • Has your premium changed?

  • Is the level of cover still suitable?

  • Has your annual mileage changed?

  • Are all the named drivers still required?

  • Have any optional extras changed?

  • Has the excess increased?

  • Could another insurer offer a more suitable policy?

Comparing your options gives you a better idea of how competitive your renewal offer really is.

Does my insurer have to show me last year's price?

For qualifying general insurance renewals, FCA rules require firms to provide your proposed renewal premium and your previous premium in a way that makes them easy to compare.

This makes it easier to see how much your price has changed.

However, price shouldn't be the only thing you compare. Check whether the cover, excess or other policy features have changed too.

Is my renewal price guaranteed to be the cheapest?

No.

Your renewal quote is an offer from your existing provider. It doesn't tell you what other insurers may charge.

Insurance companies calculate risk differently, so another insurer could potentially offer a different price for similar cover.

That's why renewal time can be a useful opportunity to compare car insurance.

When should I start comparing car insurance?

Don't necessarily wait until the day your existing policy expires.

Research has suggested that comparing and arranging car insurance several weeks before you need the new policy to begin can produce lower average prices than leaving it until the last minute.

Starting early also gives you more time to compare the cover rather than rushing into a decision.

Can I turn off car insurance auto-renewal?

Yes.

FCA rules require insurers to provide easy and accessible ways for consumers to cancel the automatic-renewal feature.

You should be able to opt out when you purchase the policy or at any point during the policy term, and cancelling the auto-renewal feature itself should be free.

Check your insurer's website, app or policy documents for instructions.

Remember that stopping auto-renewal doesn't arrange replacement insurance for you.

If you're keeping or driving the vehicle, make sure appropriate cover is in place when your existing policy ends.

What happens if my car insurance has already auto-renewed?

If you've only just noticed that your policy has renewed, contact your insurer as soon as possible if you don't want the new policy.

Insurance policies can have cancellation rights, but the exact position — including any amount you may need to pay — will depend on the circumstances and policy terms.

Check your documents or speak directly to your insurer before arranging alternative cover.

Don't cancel an existing policy without making sure you won't accidentally leave yourself uninsured.

Should I compare quotes even if I'm happy with my insurer?

It can still be worthwhile.

You may ultimately decide that your existing insurer provides the best combination of price, cover and service for you.

But comparing gives you something against which to judge your renewal.

You don't necessarily need to switch simply because another policy is a few pounds cheaper either. Look at:

  • The total premium

  • Compulsory and voluntary excess

  • Breakdown cover

  • Courtesy car provision

  • Legal expenses

  • Windscreen cover

  • Optional extras

  • Policy exclusions

The cheapest quote isn't automatically the most suitable policy.

How do I compare car insurance before renewal?

Have your existing renewal documents available so you can compare like-for-like cover where possible.

You'll usually need details including:

  • Your vehicle registration

  • Your driving licence

  • Your address

  • Occupation

  • Estimated annual mileage

  • Claims and convictions

  • No Claims Discount

  • Additional drivers

  • The date you need your new policy to start

Make sure the information you provide is accurate.

Should I auto-renew or switch?

There's no single answer that works for every driver.

Auto-renewal may be convenient and your existing insurer may still offer suitable cover at a competitive price.

But you won't know how your renewal compares with other options unless you look.

A simple approach is:

Get your renewal quote → check the cover → compare alternatives → then decide.
